How to Book Movie Tickets in Korea Without a Korean Phone Number
Booking movie tickets in Korea can be surprisingly difficult if you do not have a Korean phone number, a Korean payment method, or an account with a local cinema chain.
For popular films, premium theaters, and special screenings, waiting until you arrive at the cinema may mean that the seats you want are already sold out.
I recently helped an international visitor book a sold-out IMAX screening at CGV Yongsan I’Park Mall. This experience showed me how quickly cancelled seats can disappear—and why booking from outside Korea can be so frustrating.

Why Is It Difficult to Book Movie Tickets in Korea?
Korea has several major cinema chains, including CGV, Lotte Cinema, and Megabox. Their websites and mobile apps are useful, but the booking process is mainly designed for people living in Korea.
Depending on the cinema and booking method, international visitors may encounter problems such as:
- Needing a Korean mobile phone number for identity verification
- Having difficulty creating or verifying a local account
- Being unable to use an overseas payment card
- Seeing important booking information only in Korean
- Being unable to reserve popular seats before arriving in Korea
Some cinemas may allow non-members or overseas cards in certain situations, but the process is not always consistent. Even when the website can be opened in English, the final verification or payment stage may still cause difficulties.
Can You Buy Movie Tickets at the Cinema?
Yes. In many cases, you can purchase a ticket at the cinema counter or through a self-service kiosk.
This can work well for regular screenings with plenty of available seats. However, it is risky for highly anticipated movies, weekend screenings, special formats, and popular locations.
The screening may be sold out before you arrive, and the remaining seats may be in less desirable areas of the theater.
A Real Booking Request I Received
An international client contacted me because they wanted to watch The Odyssey in IMAX at CGV Yongsan I’Park Mall.
CGV Yongsan is one of Seoul’s most popular cinemas, especially for major IMAX releases. By the time I checked the official booking page, every seat for the requested screening was already sold out.
The client did not have a Korean phone number and believed that purchasing a ticket in person might be the only available option. But waiting until the day of the screening would have made it very unlikely that a good seat—or any seat—would still be available.
How I Found a Cancelled Seat
Sold-out does not always mean that no seat will ever become available again. Customers sometimes cancel their reservations, and those seats return to the official booking system.
The difficult part is that a cancelled seat can disappear almost immediately. When one seat became available, someone else booked it before I could complete the reservation. The same thing happened more than once.
I continued checking and refreshing the official CGV booking page. Eventually, another cancelled seat appeared, and I was able to complete the booking successfully.

For a sold-out screening, check the official booking page regularly. Cancelled seats may appear without warning, especially as the screening date gets closer. Availability is never guaranteed, so avoid making travel plans based only on the possibility of a cancellation.
This Was a Booking Service, Not Ticket Resale
I did not buy a ticket and resell it at a higher price. I booked an official cinema ticket on the client’s behalf after receiving their preferred movie, location, date, and screening information.
The payment made through Fiverr included the actual ticket cost and the fee for the time and assistance required to monitor availability and complete the booking.
The total cost and the scope of assistance were confirmed before the order began. After the reservation was completed, I sent the client the booking information needed for the movie day.
What Information Is Needed for Booking Help?
If you need someone in Korea to help with a cinema booking, prepare as much information as possible before making a request.
- Movie title
- Preferred cinema and location
- Preferred date
- Acceptable screening times
- Number of tickets
- Preferred seating area
- Whether alternative dates or times are acceptable
- Maximum budget, including the ticket and service fee
Flexibility can make a significant difference. If only one exact screening time or seat is acceptable, the booking may be impossible—especially when the showing is already sold out.
What Happens After the Ticket Is Booked?
The exact process may differ by cinema, but you will usually need the reservation details or ticket information when you arrive.
Check the cinema location carefully, arrive early, and keep the booking information accessible on your phone. Large cinema complexes can take time to navigate, particularly if you are visiting them for the first time.

Tips for Booking Popular Movies in Korea
- Check when ticket sales are expected to open.
- Book as soon as the official schedule becomes available.
- Consider weekday or daytime screenings.
- Keep more than one acceptable date or time available.
- Check multiple cinema locations if your first choice is sold out.
- For sold-out screenings, continue checking for official cancellations.
- Confirm the cinema branch carefully before payment.
For premium screenings, the cinema location and auditorium type matter. Always review the reservation details before completing payment, because different branches can have similar names.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can foreigners book movie tickets online in Korea?
Sometimes, but it depends on the cinema, account requirements, verification process, and available payment methods. Some visitors complete the process successfully, while others are stopped by Korean phone verification or payment restrictions.
Can I buy a ticket at the cinema without a Korean phone number?
In many cases, yes. You can usually try the ticket counter or a self-service kiosk. However, tickets for popular screenings may already be sold out by the time you arrive.
Can someone else book a movie ticket for me?
Depending on the cinema’s rules and the type of ticket, another person may be able to complete the official reservation on your behalf and send you the required booking details.
Can a sold-out screening become available again?
Yes. Seats may return to the official booking system after a cancellation. However, there is no guarantee that a seat will appear, and available seats can be booked by someone else very quickly.
Is cancelled-seat monitoring guaranteed to work?
No. Monitoring can improve the chance of finding a returned seat, but it cannot guarantee availability or a specific seat.
Final Thoughts
Watching a movie in Korea can be a memorable part of your trip, but local verification and payment systems can make advance booking difficult for international visitors.
For regular screenings, purchasing a ticket at the cinema may be enough. For a popular movie, premium auditorium, or sold-out screening, planning early and keeping your schedule flexible will give you a better chance.
